What is EMDR?

Eye Movement
Desensitization &
Reprocessing.

EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain process and heal from distressing memories and experiences. Instead of feeling like painful events are still happening in the present, traumatic memories can become integrated as experiences from the past.

Through bilateral stimulation — including gentle, rhythmic left-to-right movements — EMDR helps the brain reprocess experiences that were previously overwhelming or difficult to fully process. The brain begins to integrate these memories, reduce emotional distress, and support healing.

An EMDR Intensive provides extended therapy sessions designed around your individual needs. This focused approach allows deeper trauma processing in a shorter timeframe than traditional weekly therapy while maintaining a safe, supportive, and carefully prepared environment.

What Shifts

What Changes Through EMDR Therapy?

1
Memories Lose Their Emotional Intensity

Traumatic memories can shift from feeling immediate and overwhelming to feeling like events that happened in the past. Many people experience memories becoming less vivid and less emotionally triggering.

2
The Body Begins to Feel Safe Again

Trauma can impact the nervous system and show up through physical stress responses. EMDR therapy can help reduce trauma-related tension and support a greater sense of calm and safety.

3
Emotional Control Returns

As unresolved trauma is processed, triggers may become less powerful. Many people experience improved emotional regulation and greater confidence navigating daily life.

4
A new perspective emerges

EMDR can help create new understanding around past experiences, supporting self-compassion, confidence, and a renewed sense of control over your own life.

The EMDR Intensive Process

Preparation Comes Before Healing

EMDR Intensives require thoughtful preparation before trauma processing begins. This preparation is not a barrier — it is what creates the safety, trust, and foundation needed for effective EMDR therapy.

01

Get to Know Each Other

We begin with initial sessions focused on building trust, understanding your story, and learning what brings you to therapy. There is no pressure to move faster than you are ready for.

02

Develop a Trauma History

Together, we create a clearer understanding of your experiences — what happened, how those experiences continue to affect you, and what areas may need attention during EMDR therapy.

03

Assess & Build Regulation

Emotional regulation is an essential part of EMDR preparation. If additional coping skills are needed first, we focus on developing those tools using evidence-based approaches to help you feel grounded and supported.

04

Introduce Bilateral Stimulation

Before beginning the EMDR Intensive, you will learn about bilateral stimulation and how it works. This allows the process to feel familiar and comfortable before deeper trauma processing begins.

Is EMDR Intensive Therapy Right For You?

An Honest Assessment of Readiness

EMDR Intensives are not the right fit for everyone — and that is intentional. Effective trauma therapy requires preparation, safety, and readiness. Rushing the process does not create better results.

You May Be Ready For An EMDR Intensive If:
  • You Feel Safe and Supported in the Therapeutic Relationship
  • You can identify and manage difficult emotions without becoming overwhelmed
  • You're willing to slow down and do the preparation work
  • You're ready to stop circling and go through
We May Need More Time If —
  • Emotional regulation skills are still developing
  • You're in an acute crisis or unstable life situation
  • We haven't yet established a strong therapeutic relationship
  • The trauma history hasn't been fully mapped
